What are the typical sizes for garage doors?

Consider this situation: you're ready to install a garage on your home and part of that involves choosing a garage door. However, you may not have a lot of information about the process, so you start thinking, "I'll just pick out a standard model and move on."

The issue with that is that "standard" doors don't exist.

It's true. There is no single size of garage door that nearly everyone uses. Sure, a few sizes are more common. However, it's not as simple as walking into a retailer and ordering a standard door since they do not exist.

What do you envision when you think about a typical garage door?

A pair of windows? A cream color? A size of 14 x 7 feet? While this might be what you think when you envision the average door, someone else will have a different opinion. Maybe they believe a standard door is 8 x 7 feet, light blue, and sans windows. The reality is that there are so many styles of garage doors that there will never be a "typical" garage door.

Having so many choices can be overwhelming. It might seem it would be easier if you could choose from two sizes, three colors, and one door type. That might be true, but it also wouldn't let you show off your personality through your garage door.

Since we all have different preferences, there are many sizes, styles, and colors to meet your needs. This can be overwhelming, but we'll share tips for selecting the garage door that fits your needs the best.

There isn't a single standard size, but a few are more common than others.

Garage doors are most often 7 to 8 feet high and range from eight to 16 feet wide.

Keep those dimensions in mind when you make decisions about which garage door might be best for your home.

Considerations when purchasing garage doors

Have you decided the way you'll choose the door size? For example, are you building a new garage or choosing a door based on the one you already have installed?

For those who already have a garage but need a new door, we offer a variety of tools that can help you make the best choice. There are several things to know, including the space available in your garage to install the tracks to lift the door, sometimes called lifts, which will hold the door open when needed. There are different types of lifts, and the right model will depend on your space and specific needs.

On the other hand, those building a new garage will first need to sit down and consider what the garage's uses will be. This will help you determine the right garage door size.

The width of the door comes down to how the garage is used.

Think about garage usage

Already know how the garage is going to be used? This will clue you in on the correct size. For instance, a garage holding one car will need a different door size than one with two cars and a motorcycle.

Only have one car? A door between seven and 10 feet will do the job. Seven feet might be a little snug, while eight is average and nine will give you a bit of extra room.

If you have an SUV, pickup, or another large vehicle, choosing a nine-to-10-foot door is best. The great thing is that your door can be made in any size you want, from four to 20 feet in width.

Another factor that plays into the door size is the total size of the garage. However, this is only accurate in some cases. Two garages of varied sizes could have the same door size. For two garages that are the same size, door sizes can still vary. It also depends on what you like.

Double garage doors range from 14 to 20 feet, while singles can run from seven to 12 feet.

Need to store two vehicles in your garage? A 16-foot door is an excellent option for having the space you need. A 14-foot door can work, but you'll have less room for error. In addition, parking the vehicles at angles might be required.

If you need parking space for two cars, a single nine-foot door isn't going to do the job. So, the next question is whether you want two smaller single doors or a larger double door.

There are pros and cons to both options. For instance, if one door has an issue and won't open, a single door might leave you stuck and late to work. On the other hand, if there are two doors and one opener isn't working, the other door can give you an exit point.

Whether you choose two single doors or a single double door, the prices will be similar. The only difference is if you need to purchase additional door openers. This will make a pair of doors cost a bit more since you'll need two openers for the garage doors.

Are you building a small shed for the garden? Don't worry; smaller doors are available. For example, if you need to house a lawn tractor or other item, you can select a door from four to six feet in width.

Reasons to consider a LiftMaster garage opener

Lifting a door gets more challenging as the door becomes heavier and larger. You can make things easier for everyone by bringing in a professional who can install an electric door opener and take care of any needed maintenance.

LiftMaster has a variety of models you can select. One of them is the model 87504-267. It has a wireless connection so you can monitor and control it from any location. These doors also protect you from burglars. If someone forces the door open, it will push back the opposite way to keep the door secure.

Thinking about the design of the garage door

Many of the doors we offer are cut to the nearest inch to create as much space as possible. Then, weatherstripping is added to fill in the extra, so you get a proper installation without unsightly gaps.

On top of that, all the doors are made custom so there's no extra charge for whatever dimensions work best for you.

However, make sure the door design works with the size you select. Even if two doors have the same pattern, different sizes can create unique spacing between patterns so that they won't look exactly the same. If there's too little or too much space, this is something to be aware of.

All about style

Sure, you want a door that does its job. But you probably also want that door to look great. This is important since a garage door can make up about 1/3 of the façade of your home. People are going to notice it.

Think about the three categories of styles that you can choose from: Traditional, Contemporary, and Carriage House. Then, select the one you like most and peruse all the models available before customizing to your liking.
